Economic Cooperation

As a member of the OECD, New Zealand is not a partner of a mutual economic coooperation configuration. However, the German Ambassador in Wellington is also accredited to a number of South Pacific islands: the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu. Some of them belong to the least developed countries.

The Federal Republic of Germany provides considerable funding to regional technical co-operation projects such as the Pacific-German Regional Forestry Project (PGRFP). This project is implemented in partnership with the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) and eight Pacific Island Countries.

Germany also supports and funds the relevant economic co-operation programmes of the European Union.

In addition, the Embassy supports a scheme of small scale projects, thus contributing to local and regional development in the countries concerned plus Niue. As one of the conditions for the provision of this support, small scale projects must be beneficial to the population in the project area and be carried out by local contributors.

Guidelines for Financial Support by the German Embassy for Small Scale Projects

The German Embassy in Wellington runs a programme for small scale co-operation projects in the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Niue, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu.

Pacific-German Regional Programme on Adaptation to Climate Change in the Pacific Island Region

The SPC/GTZ (German Technical Cooperation) Project is the first climate change-specific project for SPC LRD. The Project has its origins from the Pacific Heads of Agriculture and Forestry Services (HOAFS) meeting of September 2006 where it was strongly recommended that the SPC Land Resources Division develop a regional project proposal on climate change.

German Support for Pacific Island Countries

COPING WITH CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE PACIFIC ISLAND REGION (CCCPIR)

Pacific Island Countries (PICs) are among the countries most vulnerable to climate change globally.

The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has extended its commitment to support Pacific Island Countries to cope with the effects of climate change. It has allocated another 10 Mio. € to the already ongoing SPC/GTZ regional program “Adaptation to Climate Change in the Pacific Island Region” extending the overall financial envelope to 14.2 Mio. €.
